Have your say: Object to Midland Bacon’s proposed expansion

Midland Bacon is a piggery in Carag Carag, Victoria. In 2022 and 2024, investigations into the piggery by Farm Transparency Project (FTP) raised serious animal cruelty concerns. The hidden camera footage obtained by FTP allegedly captured:

🐖 Piglet thumping and piglet mutilations without any pain relief.

🐖 The use of sow stalls.

🐖 A worker allegedly sexually assaulting a sow who was trapped in a farrowing crate. Her ear tag read 8416, and she was later named Olivia by animal advocates. This incident resulted in court proceedings, where the accused worker was acquitted of one charge of bestiality after a magistrate ruled the hidden camera footage had been obtained illegally and could not be used as evidence.

Now Midland Bacon wants to expand, and you have the chance to speak up and object.

Campaspe Shire Council has received a planning application from Midland Bacon seeking approval to expand their operations by building a new sow shed and two finisher sheds on their property.

The piggery sits near multiple swamps and lakes, which provide important habitats for plants and wildlife, including waterbirds. 🦆

The proposed expansion would bring increased pollution risks to the environment and public health risks for the local community.

Campaspe Shire Council will be meeting on March 17 at 6pm AEDT to decide whether or not they will approve Midland Bacon’s application to expand. Until then, anyone Australia-wide can submit an objection.

By lodging an objection, you send a clear message: animal cruelty has consequences, and the environment, wildlife, and public health must be protected.

Submissions close at 6pm AEDT, 17 March 2026
