LIVE EXPORT - A DISASTER WAITING TO HAPPEN

The MV Bahijah sailed from Fremantle in early January 2024 with around 15,000 sheep and 2,000 cattle on board bound for Israel, but was ordered by the Federal Department of Agriculture to return “due to the worsening security situation” in the Red Sea.

The Bahijah's failed voyage and arrival back in Australia with thousands of suffering animals stuck on board during a heatwave showed once again the live export industry’s disregard for animal welfare and its long history of disasters where animals always pay the price.

Sending thousands of sheep and cattle on a long sea voyage into an active conflict zone simply defies belief. Why was this live export ship allowed to leave?

The animals are the true victims here, not the loud, callous live export lobby and farmers who consigned these animals to be slaughtered on the other side of the world via a dangerous conflict zone, forcing them to endure weeks at sea before a brutal death.

This miserable trade should not exist.

Tell the Albanese Government to ACT NOW to confirm and legislate an end date for the live sheep trade by sea, delivering on its 2022 election promise.
