Affordable Housing for All

The housing crisis has been brought about by the policies of both major parties (Liberal and Labor), over many decades. These people have created the problem and profit from it (many own multiple properties and enjoy capital gain from rising prices). They will not fix it.

The Animal Justice Party believes that secure housing is a fundamental human right for everyone, that must be prioritised over money-making for the few.

Key Features:

  • Increase Federal government funding and support for the development of more, quality public housing. Governments are making historically low levels of public housing available and this needs to change.
  • Increase Federal government funding for short-term emergency housing for people (and their family animals) who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.
  • Advocate for state, territory and local governments to make zoning laws more flexible to allow for higher-density housing developments, and infill (the replacement of houses with higher density dwellings), near public transport and essential services in urban areas.
  • Advocate for state, territory and local governments to support the roll out of innovative construction such quality smaller or tiny houses, and modular and prefabricated housing, to reduce building costs and timeframes.
  • Gradually adjust Capital Gains Tax and Negative Gearing to create a fairer tax and housing system.
  • Introduce holding charges for vacant properties to incentivise these properties being added to the housing and rental stock.
  • Work with states and territories to develop a consistent national framework for regulating short-term rentals. Investigate tax implications of short-stay rentals, to make sure incentives align with the needs of affordable housing starved communities.

What impact will this have:

  • Prioritise secure housing as a fundamental right for every Australian and our family animals.
  • Improve housing choice, quality, supply, location and affordability.
