Before joining the Animal Justice Party, Colin established and was convenor of the first ever South Australian Greens policy/action group dedicated to raising awareness of animal justice issues.
He has been a central figure in organising protests and fronting the media in efforts to ban the cruel and unethical so-called ‘sport’ and ‘entertainment’ of jumps racing in South Australia. He was able to assist the AJP with drafting its policy on the issue.
He is a vegetarian, a lover of nature, and he ran as an Independent candidate (Ban Live Animal Exports) in the Port Adelaide 2012 state by-election. He also ran as the Greens Port Adelaide candidate in the 2007 federal election.
His commitment to the principles of animal justice commenced in earnest when he refused to take part in any animal experimentation during his biological science degree at Adelaide University. He was also part of demonstrations in Tasmania to save the Franklin River in the 1980s.
His education history is diverse and includes biological science, psychology, environmental studies, marketing, horticulture and commercial photography. He has two children, Blake and Ella.
I believe that I am an ideal AJP candidate as I am very experienced in the fight for animal rights. I have been involved in advocating for animals for many years as a volunteer with Animal Liberation SA and, in more recent years, as an employee. I have also had hands on experience working with animals as an employee at busy boarding kennels and working with wildlife at Minton Farm rescue sanctuary.
In my role at Animal Liberation SA I have been involved with planning and implementing campaigns, liaising with other animal groups (Animals Australia and the RSPCA SA), coordinating volunteers and lobbying politicians. I am also the spokesperson and media contact.
I am passionate about working with a strong and dedicated team to bring about real change in the rights and status of all animals. I believe that there is a desperate need for a voice in parliament to speak for the animals without having any other agenda or conflict of interest. I believe that I can be an asset to the AJP as running mate with Colin Thomas. I have worked effectively with Colin on a couple of occasions and believe that we compliment each other. I believe strongly that animals deserve to have their rights as sentient beings recognised and am willing to put in the effort to achieve this goal.
