Labor Must Ban Live Exports

The temporary suspension of the live cattle trade to Indonesia does not and will do little to stop the brutal live animal export trade.

The Animal Justice Party (“AJP”) is continuing its call for Labor to ban live animal exports and not hide behind a temporary suspension in this barbaric trade.

According to AJP President Professor Steve Garlick: “A temporary suspension is just that – temporary. Labor must act an ban all live animal export.”

“Live cattle export to Indonesia is just the tip of the iceberg and the we have no confidence that any animals are being treated humanely in any country they are exported to,” said Professor Garlick.

“We welcome the private members bills being proposed by Adam Bandt and Andrew Wilkie, which seek to ban this cruel trade. Labor’s decision to introduce a temporary suspension of the live cattle trade to Indonesia does not go far enough.”

“The industry attempts to train and monitor Indonesian abattoirs have failed and there is no indication that their latest delegation will do anything to ensure World Organisation for Animal Health welfare standards were met”, he said.

“The live animal export industry does not stack up economically or morally and the government should act immediately to ban this exceptionally cruel trade.”
